Respect, Hard Work, and Saying Yes

I haven’t done one of these for a while — I’ve been busy at the farm, working on my woodcraft, and gigging as much as I can with the money I’ve got.

This week’s blog is all about comedy and what I’ve learned as a small promoter. It’s not just about being funny — it’s about how you treat people. The impression you make on and off stage matters. Be kind, respect others, and don’t pester promoters for gigs.

You could be the funniest person in the world, but if you’re rude backstage or to other comics, promoters notice. Trust me, people talk — especially in your local area. It’s all about respect. I’ve learned that if you’re kind to others, you’ll get that kindness back. But if you’re rude, word spreads and it’ll hurt your chances.

And here’s another thing: promote yourself. Be active on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. The more people see you, the more chances you’ll get later on. Over the past three years, I’ve had opportunities to audition for The Traitors, Britain’s Got Talent, and another game show. I didn’t get them — but it just shows people are watching. It might sound a bit creepy, but that’s what producers do — they’re always looking for the next funny person.

Saying Yes and Making Connections

Since being single, I’ve learned to say yes to everything. Last night I went to a gig in Northampton — normally I’d do my set and head home, because I’ve got other jobs to think about (well, several 😅).

But this time I went with my good friend George Copping, who wanted to stay and meet a friend. I’m so glad I did because I ended up meeting some amazing acts and catching up with Katie Slater. It was such a joy watching everyone. You really never know what opportunities might come your way when you just say yes.

And oh, by the way — we’ve sold out our first Disabled Cants show in Leicester since getting back from Edinburgh! 🙌 It’s proof that when you keep going, surround yourself with good people, and say yes to new experiences, good things happen.

So that’s it from me for now. Have a great weekend — I’m off to promote the Nottingham Comedy Festival, where we’ve got several fantastic acts performing.

Just Google Disabled Cants for all the details.
