Wow — what a week I’ve had, and what a week Blue Badge Bunch has had too.
It started off fairly quietly in the shed, building my Christmas trees. Then on Thursday, I suddenly realised I had two orders to send out — Christmas trees and my children’s book. That felt really good. I made a bit of Christmas money, which always helps.
Then, still on Thursday, I was at work and kept getting texts from my agent. I was busy, so I ignored them until lunchtime. When I finally opened one, I couldn’t believe it.
It was from Channel 4 – The Last Leg.
One of our friends, Helen, had nominated Blue Badge Bunch for a Hans Award. Let’s just take a second to break that down — a Hans Award, on Channel 4, on The Last Leg. One of my favourite shows.
I love The Last Leg, especially when the Paralympics are on. It’s not about politics — it’s about having fun, taking the mick out of ourselves, the same way non-disabled people do with each other. And why shouldn’t we? That’s real equality.
When I found out, I honestly broke down crying — but happy tears.
That evening, I came home and started filming our thank-you message. I must have done about 20 takes. If you know me, you’ll know I shake, and getting the camera in the right position isn’t easy. But with the help of Susanna Clarke and Joe Dickinson — part of the Blue Badge Bunch team — we got there.
Then we watched the show. Award after award was being handed out, and we thought we might be the last ones shown. In the end, they didn’t play our thank-you video — which I completely understand, they were running out of time.
But here’s the thing I didn’t realise at first:
our award was right there on the desk at the front of the stage.
And that says a lot.
Just because you weren’t shown doesn’t mean you weren’t seen.
They know who we are now.
They’ll be watching.
And who knows — one day someone might say, “Would you like to come on the show?”
You never know who’s watching.
A Little Tip
This whole experience reminded me of something important:
get your ducks in a row (not eggs… 😂).
Be on social media.
Post regularly.
And it doesn’t always have to be, “I’ve got a gig.”
Do something silly.
Film your hobby.
Show people who you are.
I post videos about LEGO, woodworking, gardening, jokes — all sorts. Mix it up. Because you never know — one video might go viral, and sometimes all you need is one moment to help you get a foot in life.
And Finally…
I’ve started reconnecting with old friends again, which has been a real joy. A simple text to a friend in America turned into a proper catch-up, and it reminded me how important those connections are.
I feel like I’m back on track now. I know what I’m doing, and I don’t feel the need to be out every weekend. Right now, I’m happy staying in, looking after myself, and avoiding the flu — because if I get ill, that’s me out for a good week and a half.
I’ll probably do one more blog next week, and then that’ll be it until the new year.
So for now —
have a good week. 💙
